The Taroran Republic (Taralian: Fiāgrium Taroran), often referred to contemporaneously as Arkarnas or historiographically as the Republic, was the dominant Taroran state as it existed between 38,295 and c. 36,000 BDR. Uniquely characterised among the various incarnations of Arkarnas by its democratic nature, the Republic began with the overthrow of the Karnasian First Union and its meritocratic hierarchy. Its founding principles involved the elimination of the caste system, and the institution of a federal, egalitarian society.

Under the Republic, the Tarorans colonised systems outside their local interstellar group for the first time, beginning their most rapid phase of territorial growth since the unification of Karnas. However, as more prefectures were established, the relationship between them and the federal government became a question of increasing political and cultural sensitivity over the first two centuries of the Republic. Ultimately, political and business interests supportive of prefectural sovereignty dominated the Republic's power structures, leading to decentralisation and the dissolution of the federal government's authority. For the next two millennia, the Republic continued to exist officially, but its institutions either became ineffectual or disbanded entirely. Many prefectures, especially in the outer periphery of Taroran space, saw no benefit in remaining part of the Republic, and seceded with no federal force or will to challenge those decisions. Some Taroran regions even went to war against one another over resources, territory or socio-cultural conflicts. The chaos of the later Republic era also saw the rise of piracy and corruption.

In the late 37th millennium BDR, nostalgia for a united Arkarnas became a cultural and political phenomenon in the core prefectures, many of whom remained loyal to whatever remained of the Republic. Around this time, the local government on Karnas began to exert its influence over the Taroran core worlds, beginning the gradual reassembly of the Taroran state and the ensuing Wars of Karnasian Reunification. The Karnas government, seeing itself as the oldest region and natural successor to the Taroran Republic, centralised the territories under its jurisdiction and re-established Keldarian meritocracy. Over the next century, Karnas gradually invaded and reconquered the outlying regions of Taroran space. Although at first the process was slow and hampered by multiple defeats against superior forces from several opponents, the appointment of General Fenar as Chief of the General Staff in 36,050 BDR heralded significant military reforms and a new phase of the war. By 36,010 BDR, the final independent prefecture had fallen, and the reunification of Arkarnas was complete. Fenar was subsequently elected President of the Republic—the first sworn in since 37,800 BDR. With the support of the increasingly powerful upper castes in the Taroran Core, Fenar promulgated the Second Convenant of Keldar, ending the Republic and creating the New Union.
