Greater Karnas (Taralian: Arkarnas) was an interstellar state in the North Arm that existed from c. 40,000 to 1325 BDR. Over the forty millennia of its existence, Arkarnas experienced numerous changes in government and philosophy. However, the most persistent incarnation of the Taroran state was that of the Karnasian Meritocratic Federation. Karnas, the homeworld of the Tarorans, served as the capital of Arkarnas. For thousands of years, Arkarnas was a galactic superpower, its territory extending across the North Arm and beyond. It was the first to attain this level of power since the fall of the Omni Empire. Arkarnas was also one of the founders of the First Galactic Senate. However, its relations with fellow Senate members in the latter years of its history deteriorated, ultimately leading to the Second Galactic War and Arkarnas' ultimate collapse. Following the disintegration of Arkarnas, the Tarorans themselves, their population decimated, withdrew into isolation on Karnas.
Much of the early history of Arkarnas, as well as Taroran history prior to its formation, remains shrouded in myth and legend. While the Tarorans were excellent record-keepers, many of these records were lost after the Sixth Federation's collapse, or locked away on Karnas. However, recent archaeological discoveries have revealed clues as to the true origins of Arkarnas.
What little evidence is available suggests that Arkarnas' history stretches back at least 40,000 years. Around that time, Karnas came to be unified under a single political power after several centuries of space exploration and expansion by the various nation-states that had then covered the planet. The First Federation was founded on principles first espoused by Keldār, a prominent Taroran philosopher. The Federation was the first major application of what would become Taroran meritocracy in the planet's history. Keldār's philosophy called for a strict hierarchy, with all Tarorans being born into the lowest tier of citizenship and required to earn promotion to higher castes. Ēfilerus, who according to Taroran legend was a factory worker prior to unification, entered the race to become the first Arkai of the Federation, and through many trials defeated his rivals and became the first paramount leader of a united Karnas. This particular story remains unsubstantiated in the currently known historical record, and historians believe it to be far more likely that Ēfilerus was an individual of higher social status than that of a labourer. In any event, Ēfilerus' pioneering role in the early decades of Arkarnas' history earned him the posthumous epithet Padalunoranīr, or "Father of the Union."
